Hiking in the Salzburg mountains

Many hundreds of kilometers signposted hiking trails, Mountain paths and tours we lay at your feet.

The challenge

A sunrise hike is the name of the game - the Porsche Design gondola puts in an extra layer. In the valley there is still nocturnal haze over Lake Zell, the high mountain peaks are already warmed by the summer sun. While the gondola pushes through the fog, you will blind the first rays of sunshine, you will fall flat through the panoramic glazing into the interior of the gondola - time to take a photo.

You should take this with you

    • Rain resistant clothing
    • Warm clothing for under it
    • Sunglasses & headgear
    • Sunscreen for the skin
    • Sufficient Provisions and to drink
    • Maps & tour information
    • Info about Weather
    • Mobile phone & emergency numbers
    • camera

Start of the hike on 2000 Meter

The gondola takes us straight into the world of the Hohe Tauern Alpine Center at the foot of the Kitzsteinhorn. The summit pyramid towers majestically over the glacier plateau - "Horn", a fitting name. Although summer reigns in the valley, it is cool at over 2.000 meters. It's good that we packed warm clothes. The guide is already waiting at the agreed meeting point and greets us with a big grin. It leads us into the world of the 3.000-meter peaks. Or should we even dare the summit tour? Phew, it's cool. Tomorrow we will go on a hike on the Maiskogel family mountain, which is several hundred meters lower and awaits us with great hikes and beautiful hiking trails. Should we combine both? We could hike via the Alexander-Enzinger-Weg from the Maiskogel to the Kitzsteinhorn. Are we sure-footed enough for the alpine challenge?

Walking

There is a great deal of that in the Zell am See-Kaprun region. A glance at a panorama map is enough and you know: here you are in good hands with your hiking boots. Many hundreds of kilometers signposted hiking trails, Mountain paths and tours we lay at your feet. You just have to start walking. But not without being optimally informed and prepared ...

The diversity of the Zell am See-Kaprun hiking region is only really apparent when you look at the hikes on the Schmittenhöhe or in the Kitzsteinhorn area. Take the design gondola - free of charge with the summer card, mind you - to the Schmittenhöhe and hike wonderful paths along the Pinzgauer walk or until the summit of Maurer Kogels. Even if this path is called "stroll", you can continue on it until it no longer feels like a stroll. The mountain railway also takes you to the Maiskogel or the Alpincenter on the Kitzsteinhorn. There you hike over the Alexander-Enzinger-way or even dare one Summit victory on the Kitzsteinhorn. On the Hochkammererweg you reach the Mooserboden reservoir and continue in the direction of Kapruner Törl.

Hiking on imperial paths

The shortest hiking trail in Zell am See - Kaprun, only two kilometers long, is the Sisi path on the Schmitten. As the name suggests, it is dedicated to Austria's former empress, who wandered here. In the Elisabethkapelle a photograph and a hand-signed picture of this historical event still bear witness today.

The Höhenpromenade - a panoramic hiking trail in a class of its own

Hikers need a little more time along the high promenade to the Sonnkogel. Elaborately made wooden figures, interesting display boards and fresh mountain herbs invite you to explore. A special highlight is the Salersbachköpfl, which offers fantastic views of the Wilder Kaiser, the Leoganger Steinberge, the Pinzgauer Grasberge and the Steinerne Meer.

Pinzgauer walk - hiking on one of the most beautiful hiking routes in Austria

On the local mountain of Zell am See - Kaprun, the Schmittenhöhe, starts the well-known long-distance trail Pinzgauer walk. The route leads 25 kilometers along the romantic Salzach Valley to the Oberpinzgau. There are numerous peaks happening and intoxicating prospects are inevitable. Of course the hiking map and the camera should not be forgotten. In Zell am See - Kaprun there are also numerous themed hiking trails. The Emerald Trail reveals the breathtaking beauty of Habachtales. The nature trail offers interesting details about the legendary Veniceermandln and the most important minerals of the Habach Valley. If you want to go in search of emeralds, you can rent the necessary equipment from the Mure near the inn "Alpenrose". This is an experience especially for children. In the "herbal walk" knowledge about the flora of the Alps are taught. Nature lovers will get their money's worth here.

Hiking with lamas

Zell am See - Kaprun also offers unique trekking tours with llamas. The born load carriers are the optimal companions and even carry the luggage. Along the romantic Sigmund-Thun-Klamm the beautiful Kaprunertal leads to the Klammsee. An unforgettable fun for the whole family.
